SHORT COURSES

Take our short courses as an additional qualification to our Advanced skills Courses and put your head above the rest in the race to secure the best positions in conservation.

1. STATISTICS

Introduction
One thing that all research organisations look for in potential employees is someone that is comfortable with statistical analysis. Touch up your stats skills or start from the beginning, all abilities catered for. Statistical classes will be taught, providing an introduction into R studio using AWdF behaviour data from either the marine surveys or from land based research data. 
 
Who should take this course?

  • School/university graduates and people looking for a career change, specialising in research and conservation.  
 
Course Objectives
 
By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Understand the need for statistical analysis
  2. Develop robust understanding of how to handle and process large databases used in fieldwork
  3. Format data for use in R studio
  4. Use R studio
  5. Analyse behavioural data
  6. Understand and confidently perform a variety of statistical tests
  7. Generate results from raw data
  8. Understand R studio outputs

Course Structure

These Short Courses are only available in addition to participation in an Advanced Skills Course.
You can not take this as a stand alone course.

Short courses act as an additional ‘bolt-on’ programme that require additional study time.

The package includes:

  • THREE 1 hour lectures for additional knowledge
  • THREE 2 hour workshops for practical skills, totalling an extra 9 hours of tuition.

There must be a minimum of 3 people enrolled on this programme for it to go ahead.

This bolt-on is currently unavailable. If you want to know more about stats and GIS a member of the team will be more than happy to show you the basics when you are out in Tenerife.
The price of the bolt on course is an additional £100* to the standard price of the Advanced Skills Courses.
 
Short courses must be taken in conjunction with Advanced Skills Courses, therefore the total price is listed below:

  • Advanced Skills Course with accomodation/food*
    (£500) + Short Course ADD ON (£100) = £600

  • Advanced Skills Course without accommodation/food*
    (£400) + Short Course ADD ON (£100) = £500
 
*does not include flights.

We work with small groups so that we can work at different levels of ability, with tailored learning and mentorship to suit all abilities and previous experience.

​2. GIS MAPPING
 
Introduction
GIS is the number one skill for any person wanting to work in conservation. This course is an introduction to GIS mapping, using the data collected while on the course to create maps. An essential course for aspiring conservationists.
​
​Who should take this course?

  • School/university graduates and people looking for a career change, specialising in research and conservation. 
 
Course Objectives
 
By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Understand the need and use of GIS mapping in the world of conservation
  2. Process and handle large datasets ready for input into GIS programmes
  3. Review different software and methodologies for using GIS effectively in the presentation of research and science communication
  4. Calculate GPS points using theodolite data
  5. Create GIS maps of cetacean sightings
  6. Create GIS maps of ferry routes and boat interactions
  7. Use GIS mapping in other applications
  8. Present maps in correct scientific form.
