2021/2022 internships
Internships follow the same format as our volunteering programmes, with the additional element that we will provide one-on-one mentoring support and a structured framework for intern students. This will involve the mentor linking with the intern’s academic supervisor to ensure that the internship experience meets with faculty requirements.
The initial task will be to frame the goals of the internship so that the mentor can help ensure these are met and support the intern should difficulties arise. Most internships will require the completion of a piece of academic work, a dissertation for example. The mentor will help frame such work, determine timelines for work to be done and provide support should problems arise, liaising with the academic supervisor in the process.
The cost of the internship is the same as the cost of volunteering with the additional (nominal) mentoring charges. If a student decides they do not want the services of a mentor then they simply enrol as a volunteer.
Internships can be of any length. For further information, please contact [email protected]

Marine Conservation & Research
For the past thirty years, the Atlantic Whale & Dolphin Foundation (AWdF) has been monitoring cetacean populations off the southwest coast of Tenerife. Our core database predominantly focuses on the resident Short-finned Pilot Whale and Bottlenose Dolphin populations, through photo identification methodology, along with recording behavioural parameters laid down by the Tethys Institute for non-invasive cetacean research.
The 24 migratory cetacean species that travel through Tenerife are also recorded. This internship offers an amazing opportunity to work with this vast dataset and create your own stamp on AWdF research, as well as gaining valuable field experience on an almost daily basis. This form of experiential learning centres around intimate interactions with these amazing creatures and the impact we have on them.
Successful applicants will be an integral part of our research team, involved in all the research areas and platforms listed below, as well as focusing on a specific project agreed by the AWdF, intern and the supervisor.

enterprise
We are thrilled to announce that we are now offering a NEW internship programme for young individuals with an entrepreneurial spirit and business mindset. We are currently working on a variety of projects connected to ecotourism, fair trade and education, with a focus on encouraging Global Citizenship and ethical living throughout.
These projects are tackling issues on a local, national and global scale and the programme will be particularly looking at social enterprises and creative ideas for new ventures.
We are interested in developing business plans for local ecotourism providers or regional/national authorities (boutique hotels, scuba diving schools, vegan restaurants, stargazing activities, trekking holidays, etc.)
These projects will involve real clients and the required business plan will need to look at local and international opportunities for the business in question. It will be necessary to analyse commercial strengths and weaknesses, both locally and internationally, as well as business opportunities in both spheres and the identification of routes to market and appropriate marketing strategies. It will also be expected to make appropriate financial forecasts including cash flow and capital requirements and to identify sources of funding.
It would also be acceptable to look at developing a robust business plan for the business idea of the intern.
What we are offering?

Filmmaking & Photography
Tenerife is the most extraordinary island; it has breathtaking nature, festive culture and a variety of people and places. We are thrilled to announce that our filmmaking and photography internships have launched. Where better to get hands on experience than on a sunny island with everything you could possibly want to capture through a lens?
We are particularly interested in giving a voice and platform to people, places and environments that are often overlooked. If you are passionate about filmmaking and photography and love to explore new cultures and environments, then this is the internship for you.
Interns will support the work of the Atlantic Whale & Dolphin Foundation (AWdF) and Fair Earth Foundation:
They will be expected to design their own project during their stay on the island. Our mentoring team is made up of our own filmmakers and photographers together with resident professionals of which we have many!
All films and photographic work will be presented at The London Eco Film Festival AND all interns will have priority to participate in our international projects throughout the year: Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and more!
In the first instance, please contact James Muir at [email protected] to express your interest.
