2. In Tenerife:
Whale & Dolphin’ research-guiding volunteer programme. The AWdF has run the volunteer programme on the whale watching boats in Tenerife (the third largest whale watching operation in the world with 28 different cetacean species either resident in or migrating through the area) for some 35 years. It gives opportunity to young people, tens of thousands over the years, from all over the world to contribute through working as ‘research guides’ on the whale watching boats. The programme is low cost so as to make it accessible to everyone.
We are restricting the volunteer numbers to a maximum 15 at any one time going forward. We only want serious people on the programme; people who are committed to cetaceans whether through research, education or conservation- see below for range of opportunities available. (throughout Covid we opened the programme to other organisations unable to place their volunteers elsewhere and the consequence over the past couple of years has been pretty awful) The only way onto the programme now will be direct through us. We only want serious, committed individuals. In the first instance, send a CV and Letter of Motivation explaining why you want to be considered for a position. [email protected] There will be an informal interview process to ensure we only take in committed individuals.
The Project:
Our goal is to get back to where we were before Covid and build a dedicated cetacean team to grow with us as we re-open our global projects
Interested? Send your CV and Letter of Motivation to [email protected] Explain where your main interest lies, and when you will be available.
Discounts and scholarships are available. (normal cost £200pw to cover accommodation, board and all project logistics and resourcing)

1. Global volunteering. We have a range of volunteer opportunities across Asia, accessible from our project bases in Hanoi (Vietnam) and Kandy (Sri Lanka). Bangkok (Thailand) is our main travel hub- a fabulous city . Our main work in Asia since 2020 (Covid) has been in our fair trade operations, supporting local communities through helping them create their own wealth. Re-opening our volunteer programmes is another way of further supporting these communities.
Our key volunteer opportunities throughout the region are:
Additionally, our local project teams will ensure a complete immersion in the local culture to ensure your experience has maximum benefit to you. This will include trips of historic and cultural interest, all led by locals with great cultural insight and interest.
And, additionally, your programme will include stays with conservation organisations - Elephants, Leopards, Birds, Bears, Pangolin, Forests, Whales & Dolphins, Turtles and much more. The idea will be for you to build your personalised itinerary around the possibilities on offer with the view to determining where you would want to devote more time (should you want to). So, for example, you cold overnight at an elephant sanctuary to taste the volunteer experience and love it so much that you want to go back for a further week! In Vietnam, part of the programme allows you to spend time living with the various Hill Tribes that we work with. Great fun.
If you are interested in exploring the various Global Volunteering opportunities on offer please email [email protected] stating what your interests are and when you would be interested in participating. Our goal is to help you build a LOW COST volunteer programme that supports the local communities we work
with.
Our key volunteer opportunities throughout the region are:
- Supporting our Art & Nature programme working in communities, schools and temples with children on various art projects
- Supporting our Global Village project working with local artisans, mainly women, in developing their craft work to be more successful in finding sales in the West (we import containers of their crafts, paying fair prices and repatriating profits to their communities). This could develop into an income generator for you! Volunteers can learn craft skills in the process and we can run dedicated craft workshops (contributing more income to local women.) Fashion students would find this very useful and, if entrepreneurial, it could be the start of their own business in collaboration with local women. The same is true in other areas of product design be it toys, jewellery, bags, household or garden products etc.
- Supporting our Education programme helping teach language, conservation and business modules.
- Supporting Film (documentaries) & Photographic activities
- Supporting our important Story Telling work, capturing local myths and legends
- Supporting our Plant a Tree, Fund a Dream programme by helping plant trees.
