INTERNATIONAL DOLPHIN SPRING FESTIVAL - eARTH DAY 2021

Tenerife is a magical island, with eternal sunshine, a dramatic volcano and extraordinary nature. There is nowhere better to appreciate our planet, and the whole island will be welcoming visitors in the Spring. Come and join us at the International Dolphin Spring Festival as we celebrate our Earth, environment and culture, and see the very best of what we can be.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Picture
Los Gigantes, Tenerife. The Island of Eternal Spring, the Elysian fields of the ancients. With a snow-covered volcano at its heart and huge sea cliffs at its edges, it is a place straight out of a story. From its shores, witness a vibrant local culture, magical sunsets that transform to star-filled skies, green mountain valleys bathed in sunshine, covered with spring flowers, and the playful Dolphins of Los Gigantes.

Earth Day is the world’s largest environmental organisation, a network of some 600,000 associations, each of which will be staging events to celebrate Mother Earth. This year, we will be among them as we relaunch the International Dolphin Spring Festival in Tenerife.

The International Dolphin Spring Festival will be based in a high valley above Santiago del Teide, watched over by the volcano El Teide by day, and wondrous astronomical displays at night. Admission will be FREE and youngsters are particularly welcome. There will be a range of exciting events on offer, including the International Storytelling Gathering, live music and theatre, great food, craft stalls, fabulous workshops and activities. The entire island will come alive in a colourful celebration of the Earth, culture, and nature.

THE DOLPHINS OF LOS GIGANTES

A family of Bottlenose Dolphins reside beneath the sea cliffs of Los Gigantes. The family is matriarchal, consisting of females with young calves. Each day, they swim around the southwest seas of Tenerife, visiting the local fishermen, fish farms, boats and other families of cetaceans, including the resident Short-finned Pilot Whales further down the coast.

Spring is particularly special, as other dolphin families bring their young to rear in the waters around Los Gigantes, dominated as they are by the huge cliffs. They feed in the evenings, enjoying magical sunsets. The Fair Earth Foundation founder, Ed Bentham, has written a story about the resident matriarch Bufadera and her family...

bufadera's story

Bufadera is the matriarch of the local family of Bottlenose Dolphins. We first identified her over twenty years ago and have tracked her ever since. Her family group, as with most such groups, is around thirty animals and mainly female; young males are kicked out of the group around the age of two, as they become too boisterous (much like elephant families).

The young males go off in pairs, friends for life, visiting other family groups around the Canaries, looking for females! Their mating strategy is to approach a female, act boisterously and generally show off in the hope that this will impress and, if not, become aggressive, often enlisting other pairs of males in abducting the female from the group. They keep her away for a couple of weeks and when she returns she is either pregnant or not. This could be for two reasons. Either she has hidden the identity of the true father so there is no incentive on the part of males to kill or harm her offspring or, they have just had fun. Bottlenose Dolphins are the only species along with mankind who engage in sexual activities for pleasure rather than procreation.

Bufadera’s family have a territory that covers the length of the southwest coast of Tenerife, from Teno to Rasca, some 200 square kilometres. Everyday they start off from the waters under the sea cliffs of Los Gigantes and travel along the coast. They live in a fission fusion society which means they spend the day ‘gossiping’ with different members of the group. Bufadera has two older females she is often seen with and they will join other sub groups through the day. Their daily journey will take them a hundred miles or so visiting fishing boats and fish farms and playing with the whale watching boats, checking out who is on the boat that day and anything else that they come across - pilot whales, huge baleen whales passing through, other bottlenose dolphin groups that come to visit the area, migratory bottlenose dolphins down from the North Atlantic - there is always a lot going on.

Some ten or eleven years ago Bufadera had a daughter, named by our volunteers, Picachu. She was seen regularly for many years but has not been seen now for a couple of years. Two years ago we put out a ‘missing’ poster on the whale watching boats along with her photo (her dorsal fin identifies her) without any luck. It had been assumed she was going to take over as matriarch and sadly we now fear the worst!

At the end of their day the dolphin family is back below the sea cliffs of Los Gigantes feeding. In the Spring, other dolphin families bring their calves to the shadow of these amazing cliffs, the second highest sea cliffs in the world and they can be seen as the sun sets in what is a spectacularly beautiful space, truly touched by the hand of God. We have tried to listen in to the conversations of the dolphins but the only word we have identified so far is ‘food’ as every time we hear the word and follow the dolphins we come across a feeding frenzy!

JOIN THE FESTIVAL

Picture
The Festival will be based in a beautiful mountain valley above Santiago del Teide overlooked by the snow clad volcano, El Teide, and with views of the ocean below.

The valley is some twenty minutes from Los Gigantes, the dolphins and beaches! The main events will be in the fields surrounding a beautifully restored ancient manor house providing luxurious accommodation. Nearby, in the lower valley there will be camping and glamping opportunities to cater for a range of tastes and budgets. The main marquee, music and theatre stage, craft and food stalls, and activities will be based here. However, all over the island communities will be joining in, from Spirit Dancing on a romantic terrace with magnificent views of the ocean and stunning sunsets to the spiritual retreat at the calm oasis of the (Steiner) Cristoforo Centre, to the dolphin boats of Los Gigantes and on again to the surfing black sand beaches of Taganana. An island-wide vibrant mass celebration of Mother Earth.

If you are interested in joining the International Dolphin Spring Festival as a trader/speaker/act/workshop host, please get in touch! We would love to hear from you about what you can bring to this celebration of life!

For coming to Tenerife, you have a couple of options.

  • PACKAGE: We will provide you access to the respective venue (e.g. marquee, stage, stall, etc.), as well as accommodation and food, both of which will be local and ethical. We will take a commission on activities and workshops, but the rest of the profit is your own. You are also welcome to bring your own client databases for a reduced fee.

  • INDIVIDUAL: Alternatively, you can organise your own accommodation and food.

Please note that we are not able to organise flights.

ACTIVITIES

Along with accommodation and restaurants, we will also provide a full list of ALL activities available on the island for you to book directly. We will be offering packages from January BUT there is nothing stopping you booking directly yourselves. Access to the Festival will be FREE.

The Festival itself will be host to a plethora of exciting events and individuals from the Canaries and beyond. Each one will bring you closer to the beauty of Tenerife, celebrate the Earth, and put a smile on your face! Here’s a taster of what you can expect:

  • The International Storytelling Gathering brings together storytellers from all over the world. Each will focus on nature and Earth themes as they weave wonder with words.
  • An exciting range of live music, theatre and entertainment will take place on the stage.
  • Fabulous workshops, including music, dance, pottery, cooking, ethical living, recycling, yoga, meditation, drumming, and more.
  • Activities from a range of local providers, including horse-riding, trekking, kayaking, special dolphin trips, sunset yoga, and more.
  • Great food and craft stalls from a range of traders.

Taking part in some activities and workshops may incur a monetary charge, but this will go straight into local pockets, helping small businesses and the Tenerife economy. All will be run by locals or experts.

ACCOMODATION

Picture
We have a range of accommodation available at the heart of the festivities from luxury to tranquil, family to camping and 'glamping' - all budgets and tastes!

In January we will be offering these together with special discounts on ‘packages’ of activities. We will also have a comprehensive list of local accommodation that you can book directly. We would rather you do this as it supports the local community and not foreign hotel chains. The Festival is very much an ecotourism project. Along with lists of rural accommodation, we will also have lists of hundreds of local restaurants, bars and cafes across the whole island through which you can explore all Tenerife has to offer.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION booking will open in January

1. INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES: In the first instance, register your interest, and ask any questions to Emma

2. GROUPS: We are getting a lot of interest from groups such as scouts, university societies, and simply groups of friends wanting to get together and enjoy life again. Ask Emma for special group rates (six or more people).

3. Mind. Body. Soul. Do you want to bring your group across to help make the festival even better? Again, ask Emma for very special rates.

ABOUT TENERIFE

Picture
Tenerife is the largest of the eight Canary Islands, a beautiful place that stands between West Africa and the Atlantic Ocean. Known as the Island of Eternal Spring “Isla de la Eterna Primavera”, it basks in golden sunshine all year round, and is dominated by the magnificent El Teide, which stands at 3,718 metres, making it the highest point in Spain and third-highest volcano in the world.

Tenerife is an island of contrasts. On its shores, you can walk through serene pine forests and flower-filled valleys, along dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches, explore the mysterious Pyramids of Güímar, scale the magnificent slopes of El Teide, and wander the cultural centres of Santa Cruz and La Laguna. One of the most striking landscapes is the Cliffs of Los Gigantes on the southwest coast: a sheer vertical wall of basalt which stands up to 500 metres high. It is in their shadow that the resident family of Bottlenose Dolphins make their home.

Tenerife was originally inhabited by the indigenous Guanche people, who arrived on the island over 2,000 years ago. They believed in multiple gods and goddesses, including Chaxiraxi the Sun Mother Goddess, and Achamán the Supreme God of the Sky. After the Spanish Conquest in the late 15th century, Tenerife became a major part of the trade routes between Europe and the Americas, connecting the Old World with the New.

Today, the island is a thriving and colourful centre of culture and life. It hosts the famous Carnival of Santa Cruz every February, and welcomes thousands of visitors year round. Among these are volunteers of the Atlantic Whale and Dolphin Foundation (AWdF), a member of the Fair Earth Foundation Family. These people come to the island from all over the world to make a difference and leave a positive impact on the environment, community, and themselves.

Our Top 10 GREAT reasons for you to join us in Tenerife

Picture
 1.  Sunshine. Tenerife was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans as the Elysian Fields, the paradise where warriors killed in battle went to rest in eternal warmth and sunshine. The island is bathed in warm sunshine all year round making it Europe’s No. 1 Winter destination.

2. Ecosystems. The island has nine distinct ecosystems from the snow covered volcano to pine forests between 1-2,000 m circling the island, as well as the magical laurel forests and the extraordinary mountains of Anaga with their jagged mountain tops shrouded in mist - straight out of Lord of The Rings! Finally, there is the coastline, it's an island after all, from some of the highest sea cliffs in the world (Los Gigantes) to beautiful golden sand beaches and romantic boulder beaches, small quaint fishing harbours and everything in between. Plus, along with the vast and varying coastline, comes great seafood restaurants!

3. Wildlife. Tenerife is the best place in Europe to see nature at its very best with 28 species of whale and dolphin either resident or passing through its waters. Resident species include around 1000 Short-finned Pilot Whales in the waters between the southwest coast of Tenerife and the beautiful island of La Gomera. There are also lots of families of Bottlenose Dolphins each with their own space - the resident family live in the waters under the giant sea cliffs of Los Gigantes and waters along the southwest coast of the island. Giant Sperm Whales of Moby Dick fame and battered Risso Dolphins who fight amongst themselves are found here. Migrating through the waters during the Spring will be everything from hundreds of playful Common Dolphins and Atlantic Spotted Dolphins to the giant Blue Whale, sadly depleted in numbers because of American whaling in the 1930s. We have had Orcas and even the odd (lost) Humpback Whale! It’s not just whales and dolphins, we have myriad marine life such as, squid, octopus, rays, turtles, exotic fish and marine birds. From the haunting sounds of Cory's Shearwater echoing in the high ravines at night to the majestic Osprey. Further inland, the Blue Chaffinch, Red-eyed Dove and Hoopoe are high on the twitchers’ must see lists.

4. Flora. There is a variety of indigenous flora on the island. There are some 600 plant species only to be found in the Canaries, including some plants that only exist in small sections of remote ravines! The great Victorian plant collectors brought their rare plants from around the world to Tenerife to acclimatise at the glorious botanical gardens in Puerto de La Cruz before being brought back to Exeter and then on to distribution throughout Europe. In Spring, the mountain valleys, where the main festival activities will be centred will be a blaze of colour!

5. Culture. Tenerife is a heady mix of cultures, essentially South American with Venezuelan influence. Known locally as the ‘eight’ island there are many families with close ties to Cuba in particular. Additionally, with being off the coast of West Africa there are very strong links to African culture. The Europeans, British in particular, also have a strong presence. The great British trading families were based in La Orotava where streets are still named after them and increasing numbers of German, Dutch, Belgian, French and, latterly, Russians and Chinese have settled on the island making for a heady mix of global culture. Its energy is electric with activity 24/7, contrasted by the villages where there is pure tranquillity - except during Fiesta, Carnival, Romeria, Easter, Christmas, Three Kings, New Year, Night of the Dead...

6. Star Gazing. The Caldera, in the shadow of El Teide, is one of the best places in the world to view the stars at night in the dark sky. The views of the heavens are quite out of this world and we have astronomers available to give you an expert tour of the night skies, which is quite magical.

7. Spirituality. Tenerife is known as a healing island, some believe because of the power of the volcano. The villages have a rich tradition in herbalism and folklore. Healers from all over the world have settled on the island, many of which will be present at the Festival. Witchcraft, known as ‘brujas’ is also a strong tradition in Tenerife so beware!

8. Activities. There is a tremendous list of activities to do in Tenerife. Everything you could possibly imagine! From healing and relaxation - spirit dancing and yoga, to trekking and climbing, sailing, surfing, horse riding and much, much more! Check out our activity providers here.

9. Gastronomy. There is a huge diversity of offerings from divinely romantic to wonderfully lively, all with superb food, some spectacular views, tranquil settings, lively entertainment and a charmingly rustic vibe. Take a car, go for a drive and be spellbound by what you discover!

10. El Teide. The volcano Mt Teide and the surrounding National Park is something to behold. Whether at sunrise or sunset, the views are to die for. The experience is unlike any other. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to take a stroll on the moon - come to Teide National Park, it’s practically the same!

and the above is just for starters, come and see for yourself!

ABOUT US

The International Spring Dolphin Festival is run by the Fair Earth Foundation, a group of charitable foundations (registered with the UK Charities Commission) and Not for Profit companies (registered with UK Companies House) with a shared vision of how the world should be, and all working toward that end.

In our family, nobody is unwelcome, passion is celebrated, and life is a thing of beauty which we can all use to be the change we wish to see. We work in a range of areas, with people from all over the world, so we can all play a part in creating the best version of ourselves and the planet. Creativity, science, education and empowerment walk hand in hand. One of our key programmes is Global Citizenship, and this takes many forms, including:
  • Tree Planting to offset our carbon footprint, tackle climate change and support education.
  • Plastic Neutrality encouraging individuals and organisations to become plastic neutral by offsetting their plastic footprint and supporting micro enterprise and social plastic use.
  • Community Action supporting grassroots community projects around the world suggested by our volunteers and working towards a fairer future for people and planet.

We believe that everyone can make the world a better, fairer place by encouraging contributions to conservation, environment, cultural, social and human rights issues. Beyond any territorial borders, we are all citizens of planet Earth, with a responsibility for our world and each other. This is not a daunting or impossible ideal, but a truth, which is both humbling and achievable. We cannot do everything but if everyone does something, everything gets done. It’s as simple as that.
